Yes, hate speech and bigotry must be stopped, but you can't force someone to not say something. As much as I despise RS-2012, the first amendment protects his freedom of speech. Also, if you look at the case Brandenburg v Ohio, where a man saying that people should get guns and shoot African-Americans is constitutional because it had no clear and present danger, his freedom of speech is still legal, as bigoted and awful as it is.

Also, the 1st Amendment makes it so that the government can not restrict what you say. As a teacher of mine once said, “you can go on TV and say George W. Bush had sex with my dog, but you will face repercussions for saying it”

Petition to stop Ricksantorum-2012. (version 2)

I have taken into consideration the few people who have reblogged the petition post and disagreed with the petition: http://stop-ricksantorum-2012.tumblr.com/post/26476322695/petition-to-stop-ricksantorum-2012#permalink-notes

(although it was made very clear not to reblog the post unless you were agreeing to sign the petition). The logic behind this evades me seeing as how if you wanted to speak out against it you could have sent us an ask, made a separate post about it etc etc. However I do not want these people to feel violated by our petition strategy so I have taken some advice we received in an ask and created a Change.org petition as an alternative.

Pretty sure ricksantorum-2012 is a crafty troll, okay. I've been following that blog for a LONG TIME and everything And if he isn't, people are going to act that way and maybe developing a calmer response to behavior you don't agree with is a great way to act through example and prove you're the more rational mind.

You do realize that your just giving this guy way more attention right? I mean I hate the blog in question in fact if we met in real life this person wouldn't like me one bit but still a blog is a blog and I think if tumblr removed it it would seem hypocritical because they were so involved with the SOPA protests a few months ago.

He already had thousands of followers before J and I began this blog, and either way he would and will keep getting more attention, he isn’t going to stop even if everyone ignored him.

Again, this isn’t just to stop the bigotry he’s spreading around, he’s cyber bullied other Tumblr users that disagree with him

In response to some concerns.

I would firstly like to say that I value these concerns and have thought long and hard about them. That being said I would like to direct you to the FAQ. This should clear up any concerns about this being unethical by Tumblr standards.

I know that some people may find this surprising but when I thought up this petition it had nothing to do with political views and still doesn’t. This is not an attack on any political beliefs nor is it necessarily supporting any. I do not intend to share my political views because it is not necessary. What is necessary is to realize that this is not an attack of belief. This is not an attack on a person. This is saying NO to bullying and hatred. This is taking a stand against bigotry.

I understand that some of you may not agree with this and that’s totally fine!

No one is forcing you to reblog the petition and you shouldn’t feel pressured to.

That’s all I really wanted to say.
